Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Edmunds.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From the early age of seven, I fell in love with the idea of freezing moments in time. My grandfather bought me my first camera, and I loved making people laugh to capture those real and genuine moments. Now, nearly 30 years later, I still absolutely love documenting all the moments. March 2023, I celebrated my 15th year of business for myself, and it’s been truly remarkable to think that our community, along with clients all over the world have trusted me to capture their moments and allowed me to build, maintain, and be successful at what I love.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur is never a smooth road; I mean, maybe if smooth was like a ride uphill and around all the curves, haha! I think for me though, the struggles have never been outward; it has never been about finding the business or being in business; it’s been the time management piece. Trying to balance being a full-time business owner, a firefighter wife, a boy mom to two traveling athletes, a dog mom, and so on. I tend to give my all so much that I have times when I’m running dry til I finally take those moments to myself and refresh. I think that’s probably the biggest struggle in owning your own business, balancing the home/ work life. And, when you really love what you do, it makes it even harder to step away from the work part!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional portrait photographer specializing in documenting real and genuine moments for people. This can be weddings, families, babies, birth, graduation, headshots & branding, boudoir, engagement, maternity, etc. Any stage of life, any moment big or small, any event- I’m the person who shows up and helps you feel like the best version of you so that the images I’m creating are as real and true as possible.
I am most proud of my genuine connection to my clients. When I have families that have booked me over the years, every year for every event, it means more to me than they would ever know.
I think what truly sets me apart is being able to truly listen and understand what my clients need and help make their vision a reality. They may be a nervous bride, or a overwhelmed new mom, maybe a dad whose baby girl is graduating high school, or maybe it’s a toddler who is sad that they couldn’t have Skittles for breakfast that day… regardless of the situation, I take pride in being that safe space for clients to feel at ease, confident, and can trust I have their best interest at heart and will take care of them.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
My biggest piece of advice is to just be genuine to yourself, no one is you, and that’s your superpower. Don’t worry about what others in your industry are doing; focus on how to better yourself from one day to the next, and don’t spend too much time trying to fix things that aren’t working- grow and expand the things that do work.
When I first started, I wish I understood better the concept that all clients weren’t my clients and that I didn’t want all the clients; I wanted clients who would appreciate me, my time, and my art. I wasted several years trying to be a version of myself for everyone who needed it, and in the end, I became so much more successful when I stopped trying to please everyone and go to everyone. I became myself and the people that were and are supposed to gravitate towards me.
